Significance
It is an Il-Khanid monument remarkable with the arabesque-carved brickwork and geometric patterns as well as being the only minaret in Iraq with a twelve-sided base.

State of Preservation
The mosque dates back to the Abbasid era. The minaret is the only part remaining from the original construction. which itself was constructed between 902 and 908 by the Abbasid caliph Muqtafi, yet burnt to the ground in 1258 during the Mongol invasion of Baghdad. The minaret was refurbished in 1960.
