Atik Valide Sultan Mosque is a part of a complex including a mosque, medrese, dar-ül Hadis, tekke (dervish lodge), schools of Koran and Koranic Law, guesthouse, hospital, kitchen, kervansaray with large stables and a hamam. The complex was built for Princess Nurbanu who was the mother of Murat III and wife of Selim II. It is also called as Nurbanu Sultan Mosque. This largest complex after the Süleymaniye is built on a sloping ground on different levels. The plantype of the mosque includes six-piered dome system. The construction was expanded by Davut Ağa in 1583; two domes on each sides were added to the latecomers’ porch. Its tiles were renoved and the ceiling of the gallery on the entrance side is decorated with the original ornamental paintings. The mosque court is larger than others of the Classical Ottoman era.
