Significance
The monument is a pilgrimage site for the Shi’ite, since the 7th and 9th Imam are buried here. The mausoleum is one of the most important monuments in Baghdad with its elaborated decorations as well as the religious value.

State of Preservation
In 799 Imam Musa, the seventh imam, died and was buried at the actual spot of the shrine. There were reconstaractions and renowations through out the history.
On March 2-3, 2004, three simultaneous explosions rocked both the interior and outside of the al-Kadhimain shrine.
Repairs to the diffrent parts of the building were carried out in 2007 and 2008.
