Significance
It is an Ottoman complex that has been an education center as well as an important visiting location since al-Jaylani’s tomb is inside the complex.

State of Preservation
The complex was renovated in 1638, 1709, 1865 and 1903 under the Ottomans and restored by the Iraqi Waqfs Directorate in 1970-76 and 1982-84.
On 28 May 2007, the shrine was targeted by a car bomb attack which caused serious damage to the shrine and the mosque, and destroyed the outer wall, a dome and a minaret.
