Significance
Sultan Qaboos Mosque was built in 2002 as a result of a competition held in 1992. It is constructed on a raised platform which is the same in old Omani mosques. It can accommodate 20.000 worshippers. An institute of Islamic studies takes place on the south of the Mosque complex. The building which covers an area of 40.000 square meters was built from 300.000 tons of Indian sandstone. A distinguishing element of the mosque is the large hand-woven Persian carpet inside it. It has a 91.5 meters high minaret and four 45 meters high minarets.
